Everything Know About BLACKPINK’s Next Era – So Far

BLACKPINK is (still) the revolution! On July 5, the girl group’s label YG Entertainment announced that the quartet is on the precipice of a brand-new musical era.

“A lot of BLACKPINK-esque music has been prepared over a long period of time,” the label said in a statement. “On top of new music and large-scale projects, BLACKPINK will also go on the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group by the end of the year to expand their rapport with fans worldwide.”

New music by the K-pop idols will serve as a follow-up to their 2020 debut studio effort The Album, which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 upon its hotly anticipated release back in October 2020 and featured smash singles “How You Like That,” “Ice Cream” featuring Selena Gomez and “Lovesick Girls.”

The group also unveiled their Netflix documentary BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky in the wake of the LP’s success.

Between albums, both Rosé and Lisa debuted solo projects of their own: R and Lalisa, respectively. While the latter’s single album contained the namesake track and its B-side “Money,” Rosé’s lead single “On the Ground” peaked at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest-charting entry by a female Korean solo artist in the chart’s history.

And while fans are still clamoring for Jisoo’s eventual solo musical debut, the sole South Korea native of the girl group landed her very first leading role in Korean drama Snowdrop back in late 2021.

(Jennie, of course, went solo first back in 2018 with the appropriately titled “Solo.”)

Below, Billboard has rounded up a list of all the things you need to know about Blackpink’s latest era of music.

The Group’s Next Lead Single Drops This Summer

According to YG’s release, the girl group’s yet-untitled lead single is set to arrive sometime in August. The label also added that Rosé, Jennie, Lisa and Jisoo are in the “final stages” of recording their sophomore studio album.

The Comeback May Be More Than An Album

While BLACKPINK’s label kept their statement purposefully vague, YG Entertainment did hint that the comeback could involve more than just music by terming it a “large-scale project” that will keep Blinks entertained with content rolling out throughout the remainder of 2022.

A World Tour Will Follow

While YG has yet to reveal any dates, the label did promise that BLACKPINK will embark on “the largest world tour in the history of a K-pop girl group” in tandem with their new music. And not only that, it’s set to kick off by the end of the year.

Ryan Tedder May Be Involved

Tedder re-shared a post about the girl group’s comeback to his Instagram Story, cheekily adding two eyes emojis. While he hasn’t confirmed that he wrote or produced any of Blackpink’s upcoming tracks yet, fans pointed out that Tedder previously worked with Blackpink on their 2020 track, “Bet You Wanna,” so a 2022 team-up would be no surprise.

They Went ‘Virtual’

It was announced on July 11 that BLACKPINK would be playing in-game concerts called “The Virtual” with PUBG Mobile, which they performed at the end of the month, premiering new song “Ready for Love.”

The video, like the group’s PUBG Mobile set, features the quartet as animated characters.

The Timeframe

On July 31, BLACKPINK dropped a teaser visual titled “Born Pink,” in which the K-pop superstars unveiled a general timeframe when things would be arriving.

Without sharing specifics, the video revealed that a pre-release single is coming in August, the new album in September, with the world tour kicking off sometime in October.
